A dance performance about the inability to fly, but the desire never to give up on it. People with early-onset dementia, their partners, and buddies move hand in hand, within the limits of their own capabilities. Under the artistic wings of Marthe and Wim Opbrouck, choreographically coached by Bérengère Bodin.

This performance is the result of a dance therapy process, where Marthe, as therapist, starts from what reveals itself during the sessions and rehearsals: recurring movements, moments of closeness, vulnerability, and connection. She leaves plenty of room for spontaneity and improvisation. A theme that is carried through into the performance. Flapping their wings, the group explores familiar and unfamiliar melodies. What happens when music and movement grant access to memories or are, conversely, completely new? What happens when we touch and invite each other?
“The Ventielers” dance like birds sing in the early daylight. Hopeful. Full of life. Carried by one another. To a slow movement from Symphony No. 4 by Gustav Mahler, a tender togetherness unfolds. Bodies move alongside and with one another, mirroring each other’s strengths and vulnerabilities. Without words. We set those aside for a moment, because they can sometimes be harsh and we consider the softness of a touch more important than the spoken word.
Parallel to the creative process, Bram Moeyersoms is making a documentary film in which he follows the dancers and creators from the start of rehearsals through to the premiere. This film is intended to be a dance account that also marks the ten-year existence of Het ventiel.
In this dance performance, the concept of ‘informal care’ is ‘dismantled’ to its essence: love.
